Beautiful Blond Girl Pencil Portrait

I did this commissioned pencil portrait in July of 2008. Drawing someone with blond hair on white paper can be a challenge. I love how this came out and I think it's one of my all-time favorite pencil portraits.

Portrait of Grandfather & Grandchildren

This portrait was done using 3 separate photos as art references. This is a portrait of a grandfather with his grandchildren, however, the grandfather passed away before either of the children were born. I usually don't like to put 3 subjects on one piece of 11"x14" paper, but this worked out well because of the layout. I did this portrait in November, 2008.

This is a pencil portrait that I did around the end of September 2008. A very good looking couple, don't you think? A pencil portrait like this makes a really nice engagement gift, wedding gift, or Valentine's gift. I've had clients who used the pencil portrait as a way to propose.

Pencil portrait of a little boy in bandanna and cowboy hat. I had to take a little creative license with the bandanna, so it would look more "picturesque." I also brought out some details in the hat that were not as visible in the reference photo to give the portrait extra character.

Pencil portrait on 11x14" paper. A really cute girl with a sweet expression and curly hair. I modified her hair bow from how it was in the reference photo so it would be obvious that it was a hair bow.

Another digital photo with light coming from the left. The artwork was much better quality than this photo shows. This little boy looks so sweet, he reminded me of my little boy.

Little Girl Pencil Portrait

This little girl's expression was so cute, she had me smiling the whole time I drew her. Just about to smile or laugh, but she was also curious, so she held her lips tight for the cell phone camera to take the reference photo. Although the reference photo was from a cellphone & I would have liked more details, I thought it came out pretty well.

This is a memorial dog portrait of a Sheltie named Baxter. I completed this portrait on the 3rd of December. This portrait was done on 11x14 Bristol Smooth paper.

Little Boy Pencil Portrait

You can really see which jobs were down to the wire as far as Christmas deadlines, can't you? Obviously a very quick digital shot, with sunlight coming from the left! But I got it done, the customer is happy, and it got there in time for Christmas!

Pencil Portrait of Two Toddler Children

This portrait of two cousins was commissioned by the mothers of the children as a gift to the grandparents. This was drawn from two separate photos. In the reference photo, the child on the right was unclothed and in a bathtub. I drew on a t-shirt for her. The top of her head was not in the reference photo, but I made a guess and luckily I guessed right.

Memorial Portrait of a Man

This portrait looks light here, because I had too much light when I took the photo. This portrait was drawn from a very old photo with high contrast. I used a computer graphics program to zoom in and lighten the right side of his head and ear (to your left looking at the artwork) because I couldn't see any details at all in the ear - due to the high contrast, it was completely black. From lightening the photo on the computer and zooming in, I was able to make out a few darker areas and was able to make a strong guess.
